Questions we hear
Before you ask
How do I know if foundations have dropped?
Stepped cracking in brickwork, sloping floors and frames pulling out of square are the usual clues. On Guildford and Woking clay they often appear after a long, dry spell.
Is underpinning always the answer?
No. Many cases are solved by dealing with a tree or a drain, and underpinning is kept for foundations that cannot carry the building once the cause is removed. An assessment decides which applies.
What does underpinning actually involve?
Sections beneath the existing foundation are dug out in a set sequence and filled with concrete, or piles are driven down to firmer ground, so the load reaches soil that stays stable.
Who does the digging and the structural work?
A specialist underpinning firm carries out the work, from the design checks through to the excavation and the finished foundations.
