Environment note

Underpinning a house can leave excavated soil, spoil and spare building materials behind. This note sets out who looks after those matters during a job and how you can raise a question about them.

Waste and materials on site

Work beneath existing foundations can involve digging out soil and bringing materials to the property. Looking after that waste and those materials is the specialist firm's job. This includes anything excavated, anything delivered for use in the work and anything left over once it is finished. Choices about storing, removing or reusing such items sit with the firm carrying out the work, not with Surrey Underpinning. If you have preferences, for instance about where materials should be kept while work is under way or how the ground should be left afterwards, it is sensible to raise them with the firm before anything starts so they can be discussed and agreed with you. A skip, a spoil bag or any other container left on the drive or the road outside belongs to the firm doing the job, not to this website, and any licence needed to place it on a public road is theirs to arrange. Surrey Underpinning keeps no record of which materials a given job used, how much spoil it produced or where a firm sent it once the job was done; that detail lives with the firm, not with an enquiry form.

Questions about waste

Wondering what will happen to the waste from your job? The clearest answer will come from the specialist firm carrying out the work, so ask them directly when you talk through the details. It helps to name the property and explain what you would like to know, such as how spoil will be taken away or what happens to surplus materials. If you have not yet sent an enquiry, you can include your question in the enquiry form, and it will be shared with the specialist firm along with the rest of your details so they can respond to it. A question sent this way still goes through the same enquiry route as a new job, so allow the firm a working day or two to come back to you with an answer.
